We want Healthy Homes for All!
Every second of every day, from the moment we’re born to the moment we die, each of us is breathing in toxic air pollution from burning oil, coal, and gas. This pollution, which comes from fossil fueled-machines like gas stoves, diesel school buses, trucks, and ships, is believed to be the cause of death for about one in five of all people. It’s also heating our climate and worsening our wildfires.
Thanks in large part to the actions of students across the world who’ve been school striking, testifying, sitting in, and speaking up for each other over the past few years, Congress recently passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides funds to help transition our country to clean energy.
Now all of us, especially youth – as the people who are most affected by pollution and climate change – and the parents and teachers who care for us, need to make sure our local decision-makers use those funds to switch to clean energy as quickly as possible.
We also need to make sure our local government agencies prioritize making clean energy investments in underserved communities that bear the brunt of pollution, including many communities of color and low-income communities.
Climate Action Families is getting ready to launch our Healthy Homes for All Campaign to do just that, and we’re currently building a Campaign Strategy Team made up of students, parents, teachers, and friends to help design our campaign.
Our first step will be interviewing key experts and partner organizations in the Seattle area about opportunities to use Inflation Reduction Act funds to switch our homes, schools, and community off of fossil fuels as quickly as possible. We’ve already started some great conversations with our friends at Emerald Cities Collaborative, Spark Northwest, Shift Zero, and others.
One key takeaway for us so far from our interviews has been how many challenges our society creates for low-income families and people who don’t speak English to access the resources that can help them switch their home appliances to clean energy. We’re also hearing how powerful young people can be in helping to get the word out to our families about those resources.
We need your wisdom, creativity, and excitement to help us build a powerful, joyful campaign to transition all of our homes, schools, and our community to clean energy as quickly as possible. Together, we will end the health emergency of fossil fuel energy in our community, and deepen our skills in running powerful, grassroots campaigns in the process.
In this Campaign Strategy Team, you can:
- Connect with other community members who are passionate about protecting people and our planet
- Learn how to make your voice heard in this crucial effort (anywhere from a couple hours a month to several hours a week)
- Learn skills you can use to run your own campaigns for positive social change
If you’re a student, parent, teacher, or friend who wants to help get fossil fuels out of our homes, schools, and community, send a quick email to info@climateactionfamilies.org to join our team!
We’ll reach out to you right away to set up a quick call to learn about what brings you to this work, share more about our campaign, and discuss how you’d like to get involved.
Let’s take action together for our health, our air, and our planet.
