During a brisk winter’s embrace in late February, we set off on an adventure to Gold Creek Pond, undeterred by the weather’s chill. Despite the broad winter storm warning, we tracked our plans with the NOAA forecasts for the intended hike area and decided to take the leap. The usual crowds were deterred by the inclement weather, leaving us with a serene landscape all to ourselves, and effortless parking—a small win against the winter’s challenges.
Emory, a veteran youth member now in college, took the lead as guide for the day. The baton of leadership passed among the younger adventurers, ensuring everyone had their moment at the helm. Rusty, with a wealth of scouting knowledge, wove in lessons on unity and safety, enriching our journey through the snow-laden paths.
The pond itself presented a spectacle of contrasts: one side a crystalized mirror of ice, the other a still expanse of water, undisturbed by the freeze. Our vibrant jackets stood out against the muted colors of winter, as conversations of spring dreams and future bike rides flowed among us.
Yet, the true warmth of the day was found in its conclusion. Gathered under the back door of a car, we shared hot cocoa, cookies, bread, and cheese—a feast that warmed not just our bodies but our spirits. This moment of shared comfort, huddled together against the cold, underscored the day’s adventures. Our younger members remarked that it wasn’t necessarily the best conditions, but it was still fun. The elders shared the concept of “Type 2 Fun”, and all agreed this qualified, as fingers thawed and cold rain dripped down our faces.
As we retreated to our cars, we set off home ahead of the impending heavy snows, carrying with us the warmth of shared experiences and the promise of many more to come.
